The organization Evidence Based Birth does a wonderful job reviewing and compiling research that has been conducted on a variety of topics related to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This resource is a great way to learn from unbiased information that will help you make informed decisions about your birth experience.

Research has shown that continuous labor support, such as a doula, leads to positive birth outcomes such as:

  • increased oxytocin levels

  • increased mobility

  • increased self-esteem

  • decreased anxiety

  • decreased pain

  • decreased use of epidurals

  • decreased use of extra interventions (such as Pitocin)

  • shorter labor

  • spontaneous vaginal birth

  • decreased Cesarean section rates

  • better infant outcomes

  • overall higher satisfaction
